Heron's Nest Herb Farm
1673 River Bend Dr.
Blanco, TX 78606830-833-2627
Since 1999, Heron's Nest Herb Farm has produced medicinal and culinary herbs grown in raised beds on 25 acres of rugged yet beautiful Hill Country land located east of Blanco. Lavender was added to the well-rounded herb farm in 2004 and now totals more than 2,000 lavender plants.
Owners Fred and Melanie Van Aken are dedicated to green growing practices, including rainwater collection and use of solar pumps to provide drip irrigation. The couple follows organic gardening techniques and plans to become organically certified soon. This year they plan to convert the greenhouse to wind and solar power.
Fred and Melanie continue to improve their farm and its products by tapping into years of experience from their previous professions. As an engineer for 25 years, Fred applies his skills to alternative and renewable energy projects. Melanie was a midwife for 28 years and incorporates her love and knowledge of herbs to help balance the body, both externally and internally.
"Adding lavender was a natural for us," Melanie explained. "It has a long and illustrious history as a healing and relaxing herb. Lavender is a key ingredient in many of the healing and spa products that we make here at Heron's Nest Herb Farm."
Melanie offers private classes of four to twelve people, teaching them to make personal spa products and demonstrating how essential oil is produced. Products include a variety of herb and lavender salves, bath oil, lotion, cuticle cream, linen spray, and household cleaner.
Melanie and Fred hope that visitors have a relaxing day, while learning about medicinal and culinary benefits of herbs and lavender and gaining knowledge of green growing techniques. For additional information, visit the website at
